Dear Parents:

This afternoon the Cedar City Police Department officers were in
pursuit of a suspect in our school neighborhood. In order to ensure the
safety of our students, the school was placed on lockdown per police
department instructions. The suspect was apprehended and the school
was released from lockdown.

We thank your for your patience in this matter, and apologize for any
inconvenience it may have caused. It is always our first priority to
ensure the safety of our students.

A note from Mr. Burton!!!
Dear Parents,

I have recently received several questions from parents regarding a situation last week involving a
stranger in front of the school and how they could help. Let me first provide a few details of what
happened. Shortly after school began, a mother of one of our students, while watching her child
cross the street toward the school, noticed a man in a silver minivan. He began opening his car
door as her child passed by him. When the man saw her watching him, he then left the area. This
man was middle aged with short black hair. The police were called and an investigation began.

A line of communication to disseminate this information to parents was used that day, but
left some parents uninformed. For this, I sincerely apologize, and commit to provide better
communication. For urgent messages, a combination of e-mails, flyers, and phone contact will
be used in the future. Computerized text messages are also being investigated as a possibility. A
window on our school website for emergency information will be available at east.ironk12.org.
Your teacher will collect information as to which mode of communication will be most efficient.
Here are a few suggestions to reinforce with your child, and safety measures in place at school to
increase the safety of our students:

Parent/Child
Never walk alone. Walk in groups or with an adult.
Never approach someone you don't know/trust. If approached, run and tell a trusted
adult. Children will need to be taught who they can trust and approach.
If grabbed; yell, scream, kick...
Safety password established and practiced at home.
Follow directions carefully to help insure safety.
School
Vigilant supervision at break times.
Gate at service entrance on North side will be closed during break times.
Adult visitors will be identified with badges when staying for extended periods of time.
Adults without badges during break times...will be approached by staff.
Students will only be checked out via the office.
Only entrance doors will be unlocked during school hours.
Student conduct and bullying issues will be quickly investigated and procedures
implemented.
School website alert window to post emergency situations.

I would ask that parents check in at the office prior to going to classrooms during school. This
will greatly minimize disruptions and increase student safety.

At East Elementary, we work exceptionally hard to provide quality instruction and a safe
environment for your students. We will continue to evaluate and adjust what we do as the
environment around us changes. We take seriously the trust you place in us to take care of your
children.

Sincerely,

Steve Burton
Principal, East Elementary
